Discovery of Ariadne by Dionysus

Provenance

The House of the Thiasus (Casa del Tiaso) in Regio IX of Pompeii

Date

30-40 BCE

Medium

Fourth Style, Roman Painting

Current Location

Naples National Archaeological Museum

The Discovery of Ariadne fresco from Pompeii depicts the moment the god Dionysus (Bacchus) finds Ariadne abandoned on the island of Naxos. According to myth, Ariadne had helped Theseus defeat the Minotaur, only to be left behind as he sailed away. In this scene, she lies asleep or just awakening, often semi-draped, while Dionysus approaches, sometimes surrounded by satyrs or maenads.

Painted in the Fourth Style, the fresco is rich in emotion and theatrical detail. It captures a turning point in Ariadne’s story, her transformation from a forsaken mortal into a goddess and divine bride. The work reflects Roman taste for romantic mythological narratives, especially those involving love, betrayal, and redemption.
