Phrixus and Helle

Provenance

House of Leda, Pompeii

Date

79 CE

Medium

Fourth Style, Roman Fresco Painting

Current Location

The Phrixus and Helle fresco from Pompeii depicts the dramatic myth of two siblings fleeing on a winged Golden Ram, sent by their mother to save them from sacrifice. As they fly over the sea, Helle falls, giving her name to the Hellespont, while Phrixus survives and later brings the Golden Fleece to Colchis. Painted in a vivid, theatrical style, the fresco captures a moment of divine rescue and tragic loss, reflecting Roman fascination with Greek mythology and fate.
