Regio V in Pompeii
Date
50 CE
Medium
Fourth Style, Roman Painting
Current Location

A fresco depicting gladiators in combat was discovered at the Pompeii archaeological site in Regio V. The fresco, found in what appears to have been a basement tavern or shop, shows a victorious murmillo-type gladiator standing over a defeated Thracian gladiator, who is depicted with injuries and seemingly begging for mercy. The scene is remarkably realistic, with detailed representations of wounds. Experts believe the location suggests the building was frequented by gladiators.
