Delusional Viewpoints of P. Fannius
Provenance
Villa of P. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale
Date
80-15 BCE
Medium
Second Style, Roman Painting
Current Location
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
One of the most iconic examples of the Second Style is the bedroom of P. Fannius Synistor, now reconstructed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The artist uses multiple vanishing points to create shifting perspectives, leading the viewer’s eye from balconies to fountains and down long colonnades that seem to stretch into the distance. The illusion is so effective that it is easy to forget you are standing in a small, enclosed space.
