Mercury in Vetti

Provenance

The House of Vetti, Pompeii

Date

62-79 CE

Medium

Fourth Style, Roman Painting

Current Location

Still in the House of Vetti, Pompeii

This fresco of Mercury (Hermes) comes from the House of the Vettii in Pompeii and dates to between 62 and 79 CE. The Roman god is shown in his traditional role as messenger and guide, often depicted with a winged cap or sandals and a caduceus (staff). As the god of commerce, travel, and communication, Mercury was a fitting figure for a wealthy household like that of the Vettii, who were former slaves turned successful merchants. The fresco reflects both the owner's aspirations and cultural sophistication, blending mythology with status in the decorative scheme of the home.
